A deep wave of sorrow has swept through the Christian community in Kwara State following the tragic death of Rev. James Audu Issa, a dedicated pastor of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in Ekati, Patigi Local Government Area. The pastor, who was kidnapped from his residence on Thursday, August 28, 2025, has been confirmed dead while in captivity.
Rev. Issa’s abduction sent shockwaves through his community. Initially, the kidnappers demanded a staggering ransom of ₦100 million. After intense negotiations, the family was able to bring the demand down to ₦5 million. However, the ordeal took a cruel turn when the bandits reportedly reneged on the agreement and raised their demand to ₦50 million.
Despite the family’s desperate efforts and prayers, Rev. Issa was never released. His death was confirmed on Thursday, October 2, by Peter Kolo, a lecturer and member of the community, who mourned the loss as a dark and painful day for the church.
Sharing the heartbreaking news, Kolo wrote:
“What a sad day. It is with a heavy heart but with total submission to the will of God that the Nupe Christian community of Patigi District Council of ECWA was woken up early this morning to the sad news of the glorious home call of Rev. James Audu Issa… kidnapped at his station, ECWA Church, Ekati… The sad news of his demise, which occurred on a date we do not know, was in the hands of the Fulani bandits terrorising Edu and Patigi LGAs in Kwara North.”
Rev. Issa, a native of Ndanaku, was remembered by many as a humble and passionate servant of God—known for his unwavering faith, tireless dedication, and compassion for his congregation.
His death has plunged the ECWA denomination and the wider Christian community into mourning. Many are not only grieving a beloved spiritual leader but also expressing deep concern over the rising wave of kidnappings and insecurity in the region.
As the church gathers to mourn, the cry for justice—and for lasting peace—grows louder.
