Jeremiah (Jerry) Ekuma Iziogo, the Lagos street trader who captured hearts across Nigeria after he was filmed giving away his earnings to prison inmates, has officially graduated with a degree in law.
In January 2022, Jerry went viral after a video showed him, then a sachet water hawker, handing out a large portion of his daily earnings to prisoners being transported in a correctional van. The incident took place in Ajah, Lagos, and was shared on Instagram by a photographer who witnessed the moment.
According to the eyewitness, Jerry gave away more than 70% of the money he had made that day—a selfless act that drew widespread admiration and sparked a wave of public support.
Moved by his compassion, many Nigerians rallied to support him financially, helping him pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer.
Today, Jerry announced that he has successfully completed his law degree. In an emotional message, he reflected on the unlikely journey that led him from selling water on the streets to the graduation stage.
“Today, a journey that started with little or no hope of crossing the finish line has come to an amazing end,” he wrote.
“A raw but naked hope of becoming a lawyer that I had. How the hope crashed, and how I started again—even in a bigger and better way—through the invaluable support of the good people of Nigeria.
“It was five years of diverse experiences—falling and getting up, knowing I couldn’t afford to disappoint the world.
“Today, by the grace of God, the final curtain has been drawn, and I’m happy you all walked this path with me.
“I can’t appreciate your support enough. You are a true testament to the spirit of philanthropy and service to humanity.
“Thank you for making my dream a reality—for keeping all your promises.”
