Military Launches Investigation Into DICON Explosion

The Nigerian military has launched an immediate investigation into the explosion that occurred at the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) headquarters in Kaduna on Saturday morning, September 20, 2025.

According to the Corporation, the incident claimed one life and left several personnel injured. The explosion reportedly happened while specialists were overseeing the destruction of expired explosive materials.

Recall that eyewitnesses in the area described the explosion as “terrifying and disturbing,” with many residents reportedly fleeing their homes in panic when the blast occurred.

In an official statement, the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, confirmed that the materials being handled at the time of the explosion included Ammonium Nitrate, Primer Caps, Propellants, and other hazardous substances.

Brig. Gen. Gusau further assured the public that the injured personnel are currently receiving proper medical care at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna.

He also conveyed the condolences of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, to the family of the deceased, while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

“The Defence Headquarters deeply regrets to inform the public of an ordnance explosion that occurred at the DICON facility in Kaduna on the morning of 20 September 2025,” the statement read.

“The incident tragically resulted in one fatality and injuries to other personnel. Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion occurred during the final phase of disposing of expired materials, including Ammonium Nitrate, Primer Caps, Propellants, and other hazardous substances.

“The situation is under control, and there is no cause for alarm. The surrounding community has been reassured that DICON maintains strict operational safety standards,” the statement added.

General Musa also directed a comprehensive investigation to uncover the root cause of the incident and prevent future occurrences.

Despite the disruption, authorities have reaffirmed that safety measures are in place, and the facility remains secure.
