No show! Rivers Governor Fubara missing as disppoinres supporters depart Govt House

Must read

What was expected to be a jubilant homecoming for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara turned into confusion and disappointment on Thursday, as the governor failed to appear before a crowd of supporters gathered at Government House in Port Harcourt.

Thousands had converged on the premises and surrounding roads from as early as 7:00 a.m., anticipating a public address from Fubara following President Bola Tinubu’s decision on Wednesday to lift the six-month emergency rule in the state. But as hours passed without any official word or sight of the governor, the celebratory atmosphere quickly gave way to unease.

By close of work at 4.00 p.m., the once-bustling Government House vicinity had largely emptied, with musicians, cultural troupes, and political figures—including his top aides—quietly departing. The governor’s close aides reportedly remained unaware of his location or travel plans, deepening the mystery surrounding his absence.

Security personnel were seen barring staff access to the Brick House, the governor’s official residence, further fueling speculation over Fubara’s next move.

Despite the uncertainty, governmental operations across the executive, legislative, and judicial arms resumed on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the House of Assembly, under Speaker Martins Amaewhule, reconvened and passed a motion calling for an investigation into the activities of the former Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, during the period of emergency rule.

The motion, sponsored by nine lawmakers—including House Leader Major Jack and members Linda Somiari-Stewart and Sylvanus Nwankwo—commended President Tinubu for restoring constitutional governance in Rivers State. Lawmakers also urged Governor Fubara to forward a list of commissioner nominees and submit a supplementary appropriation bill for the remainder of the fiscal year.

In addition, the Assembly resolved to probe contracts awarded and expenditures made from the state’s Consolidated Revenue Fund under the emergency administration, citing a need for transparency and fiscal accountability.
