Sad & tragic: Mob kills woman over alleged blasphemy in Niger State

Must read

A woman has been killed by a mob in Kasuwan-Garba, a town in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, following allegations of blasphemy.

The victim, identified as Amaye, was reportedly a restaurant owner. According to local sources, she allegedly made comments deemed offensive during a conversation with a customer who jokingly proposed marriage, referencing the tradition of the Prophet.

Following the exchange, she was taken to the palace of the District Head, who handed her over to security operatives for investigation. However, a mob later overpowered the officers, lynched her, and set her body ablaze.

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the incident, which occurred around 2:00 p.m. on August 30, 2025. In a statement released in Minna, Police Public Relations Officer Wasiu Abiodun said the woman’s remarks had provoked widespread anger, leading to the violent attack.

“Unfortunately, it led to a mob action, and the woman was set ablaze before security reinforcements could arrive,” Abiodun said.

He added that normalcy has been restored to the area, while the Command has launched a full investigation. The police condemned the act of jungle justice and pledged to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Abiodun urged the public to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, stressing the importance of allowing law enforcement agencies to handle such matters through proper legal channels.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents and human rights advocates, who are calling for stronger measures to curb rising cases of mob violence across the country.
