The Federal Government has deactivated approximately 13,597,057 social media accounts across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), citing violations of the Code of Practice and the dissemination of offensive content.

This was revealed in the 2024 Code of Practice Compliance Report, submitted by major interactive computer service platforms including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.

The Code of Practice was developed jointly by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

According to the report, titled “Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report Highlights Social Media Platforms’ Efforts on Online Harm Protection”, a total of 58,909,112 offensive posts were removed across various platforms during the year. Additionally, 754,629 formal complaints were recorded.

In a statement on Wednesday, NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, confirmed the figures and applauded the ongoing cooperation of Google, Microsoft, and TikTok in complying with Nigeria’s regulatory standards.

“The compliance reports offer key insights into the platforms’ efforts to ensure user safety in line with the Code of Practice and their internal community guidelines,” Umar said.

She emphasized that the submission of these reports marks a major step towards creating a safer, more responsible digital space for Nigerians and reflects the platforms’ commitment to upholding a trustworthy online environment.

The Code mandates that large service platforms register locally, comply with Nigerian laws—including tax obligations—and implement robust safety mechanisms for users.

While commending these efforts, NITDA reiterated the importance of continued collaboration among stakeholders, including civil society and regulatory bodies, to enhance digital literacy, user protection, and transparency across Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
