A High Court in Minna has issued an interim injunction halting the suspension and possible impeachment of Aminu Yakubu-Ladan, Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area in Niger State.
Justice Mohammed Mohamed granted the order on Friday, restraining any actions against the chairman pending the outcome of a motion on notice.
The legislative arm of the council had on July 28 served Yakubu-Ladan with a suspension notice, citing allegations of misconduct and abuse of office. The notice was endorsed by 10 council members.
Prior to the court order, the chairman had filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to stop the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) and others from conducting local government elections until current chairmen complete their terms. NSIEC had scheduled the elections for November 1.
The court’s ruling bars the 1st to 10th defendants from proceeding with the suspension, and also prevents the 1st to 11th defendants from initiating any impeachment process against Yakubu-Ladan until further notice.
The case has been adjourned to August 6 for hearing.
