President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, who reigned for 65 years. He described the late monarch as a dignified and iconic traditional ruler, whose leadership was marked by honour, duty, and selfless service.
In a personally signed tribute, President Tinubu praised Oba Adetona’s legacy of promoting unity and development across Ijebu-Ode and the larger Ijebu region. “His reign brought progress and transformation through steadfast leadership and vision,” Tinubu said.
He recalled that Oba Adetona ascended the throne at just 26 years old and became a consistent voice of reason during times of national uncertainty. “He stood as a symbol of stability and championed peace, progress, and national cohesion,” the President noted.
Tinubu reflected on their personal relationship, saying, “I found his presence comforting, his wisdom enlightening, and his honesty deeply empowering.” He also acknowledged the monarch’s contributions to education and public service, especially through the governance school at Olabisi Onabanjo University.
The President expressed his condolences to the royal family, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and the people of Ogun State and Ijebuland. He prayed for Oba Adetona’s peaceful rest and called for strength to uphold his enduring legacy.
Governor Dapo Abiodun officially announced Oba Adetona’s passing in a statement released Sunday in Abeokuta by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Kayode Akinmade.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland,” the governor stated. He added that Oba Adetona died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, on the same day former President Muhammadu Buhari also passed away in a London hospital.
Governor Abiodun described the late monarch’s reign—beginning in 1960—as a transformative era. “Oba Adetona was a beacon of unity, cultural preservation, and progressive development,” he said. “His commitment to education, healthcare, and economic growth significantly impacted Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria.”
The governor highlighted Oba Adetona’s role in elevating the Ojude Oba festival to international prominence and turning Ijebuland into a vibrant center of commerce and tradition.
“As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his extraordinary life and the legacy he leaves behind,” Abiodun said. “His wisdom and dedication to his people will remain in our hearts. May his soul rest in peace.”Tinubu Mourns Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, After 65-Year Reign
