Deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero.

The palpable tension in the commercial and ancient city of Kano has eased following the decision of the deposed emir of Kano Aminu Bayero to cancel his plan to hold a parallel Sallah durbar procession in the ancient city.

The Kano State Police Command has also officially banned all Durbar activities for the 2025 Eid-El-Fitr celebrations, citing security threats and the need to maintain peace.

The decision was announced on Friday by Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori during a press briefing at the Bompai Police Headquarters. He explained that credible intelligence reports** indicated potential plans by miscreants to exploit the event for disruptive activities.

“In consultation with the Kano State Government and key stakeholders, the Command has decided to prohibit all Durbar activities across the state,” Bakori stated.

While the Durbar has been suspended, Bakori assured that Eid prayers at designated venues will proceed under tight security. He urged worshippers to adhere to safety guidelines, including avoiding suspicious objects and refraining from horse riding, car racing, and reckless driving.

Parents and guardians have also been advised to monitor their children and prevent them from being used by troublemakers.

Both Bayero and  fellow contender to the throne,  Emir Sanusi  indicated their intention to hold parallel traditional Sallah durbar.

The cultural, and religious celebration marks the Hausa and Fulani peoples’ rich heritage and traditions, on display during Muslim festivities and special occasions was intended by both parties as a show of power and popularity.

Fears had been expressed by residents that two contending durbar could lead to a bloody clash, which could spiral out of control. Security forces have been put on alert and it is generally believed they may have weighed in to stop one of the planned durbar.

But in a broadcast on Wednesday night, Bayero said he shelved the plan in order to avoid breakdown of law and order in the state.

“This decision follows advice by our respected religious leaders. We have special regards for them. This is in addition to calls by elders and the deliberations we made with our council members.

“We pray that this withdrawal will bring a lasting peace to our dear state.

“We are reiterating that Sallah durbar is not a do-or-die affair. And if it will cause mayhem and crisis, which will lead to loss of lives and property, it is necessary for us to forgo the plan.

“We call on the people to use the festive period for visitation to strengthen the bond of kinship,” he added.
