There is no sign of relief to the pains that the Labour Party (LP) is going through as its court dramas seem to be on the upswing. The Chairman of its Caretaker Committee, Mrs. Nenadi Usman, is heading for the courts to appeal a Federal High Court judgment on Tuesday re-instating Mr. Julius Abure as national chairman.
Her words in a statement: “This evening, I met with His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, His Excellency Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha (Secretary, LP Caretaker Committee). We deliberated on the judgment passed today. The case actually preceded the formation of the Caretaker Committee. However, after being briefed, the Caretaker Committee decided to join the case.
“Consequently, we have resolved to appeal the judgment accordingly.
“I, therefore, call on all party members to remain calm and maintain peace as we continue our reconciliation efforts.”
This Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja declared Julius Abure as the substantive National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
Justice Emeka Nwite, in a judgment, affirmed the Abure-led leadership and the March 2024 Nnewi Convention that produced the national leadership of the LP.
Justice Nwite ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to recognise Abure as the legitimate chairman, overriding INEC’s earlier stance that Abure’s leadership was invalid.
Recall that INEC had argued that the LP’s national convention, which was conducted, violated the Constitution and Electoral Act, and that the party failed to meet legal requirements for holding the convention.
The electoral umpire had said that Abure was no longer the national chairman of the party, stating that Abure’s tenure expired in June 2024.
