Investigations are continuing into how at least five men described as ‘good-for-nothing, never-do-wells’ stormed the home of a retired brigadier-general, Uwem Harold Udokwere, in an Abuja estate and murdered him.

Details of how they committed the wicked act have emerged.

According to an interim report, four of the killers have been nabbed by the Police. In fact, a video of one of the killers, being interviewed in English through an Hausa language interpreter, has also emerged.

The report on the arrests, available to Everyday.ng, reads:

“23/06/2024  at Kabusa  and Pigbakasa Apo in FCT, Abuja Utako Div.operatives led by CSP Victor O Godfrey arrested four suspects who robbed and murdered a retired Brigadier General,  Gen. Uwen Harold (Retd) N/5575 15th Regular course at house No.9 Sanga street, Sunshine Homes by Kabusa Junction Lokogoma FCT, Abuja. They are (1) Ibrahim Rabiu ‘m’ 33 yrs old from Dala LGA  Kano state but resident at Rasha Apo Roundabout (2) Nafiu Jamil ‘m’ 33 yrs old from Tofa LGA Kano, but resident at  Apo Pantekar (3) Aliyu Abdullahi ‘m’ 47 yrs old from Shinkafi LGA of Zamfara state but resident at Apo Roundabout Abuja (4) Mohammed Nuhu ‘m’ 28 yrs old from Kumbotso LGA Kano state but resident at Apo primary school. The suspects have all confessed to the heinous crimes of murder and armed robbery of the late General. They stated that during the armed robbery incident, they murdered the Gen. to prevent him from harming them with his pistols he brought out to defend himself but couldn’t effectively manipulate it.

 

“They also confessed to have stolen laptops, phones among other valuables from the deceased home. As fate would have (it), the knife (with) which they stabbed him to death was recovered. The deceased black GSM phone ‘Redmi’ made was also recovered. Effort is (in) top gear to recover two pistols they confessed to have taken away from the General’s house. Effort is (in) top gear to arrest the fleeing remaining suspects and recover the weapons.”

An earlier, viral social media report on the killing of the army general who ended his military service in Lagos, but retired to a new home in Abuja, years ago, announced his death to residents of the federal capital city.

Posted on some estates’ group WhatsApp platforms last Saturday, just hours after it happened, it reads in full: BRIG GEN H UDOKWERE N/5575 RTD ATTACKED AT HOME IN ABUJA ON 22 JUN 24

“Brig Gen H Udokwere rtd N/5575 15th Regular was attacked early morning at home in Abuja. According to the wife, 3 suspected armed robbers attacked the General’s house at aproximately 0300 hrs of 22 Jun 24. The house is at No 1 Sanga Street Sunshine homes by Kabusa Junction at Lokogoma Abuja. She also said that (it) was the 3rd time they were attacked. She also said the robbers asked her for  her jewelleries and took his pistol. She further stated she heard gunshots.

“According to Pastor Awe, his neighbour, the robbers injured one of the Estate guards. That one was taken to the Hospital at Abacha Barracks along with Brig Gen H Udokwere rtd N/5575 the victim. While the injured guard was being treated at Abacha Barracks Hospital, the General was referred to National Hospital Abuja (NHA).

“Air Cdre MM Igho informed Air Cdre SA Zakari rtd of the incident at 0810 hrs. Zakari dashed to NHA to support the family. Zakari met Pastor Awe (the neighbour) with the victims wife, son and other neighbours. Air Cdre Zakari was told Gen Udokwere was dead and the corpse was at the NHA Morgue.

“Zakari met the wife, calmed her down and reported the issue to Maj Gen (Dr.) Okereke. The Comd NAOWA Hosp sent an ambulance to retrieve the body of late General Udokwere to NAOWA Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

“Gen Hashim, the neighbour has taken the family to his house for his wife to handle Mrs Udokwere. However Mrs Udokwere insisted she must see her husband.  Contact was made with the Cse (Course) Mates (NDA 15th Cse) and Brig Gen KA Kareem was tasked to visit the family which he did.

“The late General is survived by one wife and children.  Mrs Udokwere is a civilian staff and in charge of NDC Permanent Site project. They have children.

“The family will decide next line of action and regarding the funeral.

The Police in Abuja had earlier confirmed the tragic occurrence through its spokesperson, Josephine Adeh.
