“That unserious profession is paying for your medical studies”

Must read

By Tehila Hanoch, with contributions from Uncle Dee

Babe, how are you rolling. I believe all is fine by His grace

We just concluded a Broadcast Media training in school last week and I really enjoyed it, mainly because of the fact that I picked interest in Graphic Design and Content Creation but then, hmmm, the meeting was really tiring o and then when I told my dad he was like ehh the meeting was not even for a whole day and I’m complaining so I just covered it up with the fact that it’s because we weren’t served food. Please don’t laugh. Food plays its own role. A babe shall not live by book alone.

Throughout my year of studying Mass Communication, this is like the first training I’ve been involved in and then it wasn’t that bad o but it wasn’t all good too. Remember what I mentioned earlier.

Before I started this course, I actually thought that it was more of a waste of time and effort because most of my friends looked down on the course and they all wanted to study Law.

But then I remembered I read somewhere that the reason there are so much litigation in a particular country of the world stems from the fact that one in every four graduates is a lawyer. No wonder they have trouble there with everybody headed for the courts.

Worse, they now have e-lawyer applications that are said to be 65% better than the average lawyer. And that app was unfurled to the world about five years ago. So, who would need lawyers in future. I also heard the same fearful thing about doctors with machines that are 25% better than the average doctor. They call these things Artificial Intelligence, but to me they are AW – American Wonders.

With the Chinese ever so secretive, who knows what wonders they have cooked and are still cooking. Babe, I choose to remain with my line of study so as to communicate these developments.

The other one I heard that blew my mind is that the big boys of the world are considering restructuring the educational system to ensure students spend between nine months and a year for tertiary education. Why? Many of the stuff people are taught for years in school are not put to use, and since robots will take over many activities, why waste time on knowledge that will be useless. Na wa o. Where is the world going to; less educated people, more brilliant minds. I just hope they are not short-changing our generation. Anyway, na dem sabi.

Even as I got into the university, there was just this way that all mass communication students were seen so that no matter how much you try to be different, it’s more like a waste of time.

My uncle, a journalist told me the story of how a daughter of his denigrated Mass Communication in his presence, momentarily forgetting that the medical sciences she was reading was paid for from his professional pursuit. She had said something like, “When we are busy reading, these unserious students reading unserious courses like Mass Communication just go about making noise.”

Her father turned to look at the mother in dismay before turning to tell her, “that unserious course is the one paying for your serious course in that private university.” It was too late, she couldn’t take it back.

So I’ve actually learned so far that in Mass Communication, as a reporter, or a writer, or any  other part of this course you have to be really fast on your feet. In Mass Communication there is nothing like being slow or saying you’ll do a particular thing later

A mass communicator has to be very versatile to be able to fit into many conditions and systems and having a good research skill

Do you know that I was actually part of those saying that Mass Communication is for the weak and for those that just want a degree from school. Today, I find myself pursuing exactly that course.

But then I’ve come to realise that it not what I thought at all. It’s more technical than I thought, especially looking at the aspect of graphics that has to do with critical thinking to bring out the particular picture for that message, or headline casting or even editing that is more of accuracy and the truth.

All I’ve learned so far have actually set me thinking again about the course because it’s not as easy as I expected

Babe, do you know that before I even chose this course my dad was like, “me that doesn’t like talking ehh me that is always indoor, how would I be able to relate with people.” It’s actually true o to the point that even on my birthday that’s in November,  a lot of my friends didn’t know.

Hmm, I’m telling you, it was actually that bad, but at least now I’ve loosened up a bit and I have more friends

So, Mass Communication as a whole is really helping me to leave my shell and experience the world as a whole.

Will keep you posted on developments as the days go by. Cheerio.
