There are reports that the Police may have apprehended some of the robbers that attacked banks and killed ten persons, including the Divisional Police Officer and two other policemen.
A trending video on social media showed four youngmen in a minivan on a street believed to be in Otukpo or its environ, surrounded by residents, as men believed to be security operatives spoke in the background.
Since the Police confirmed the incident early on Saturday, there has been no other official statement until the video emerged on social media.
Recall that four banks were attacked in the ancient town and headquarters of Idomaland at about 4.30 p.m. on Friday.
An eyewitness, Sunday Abah, who witnessed the scenes, said the gunmen operated for several hours without security intervention.
“Armed robbers have taken over everywhere in Otukpo. They are just shooting whoever they see.
“Currently, they are robbing Zenith bank and they have been here for more than three hours”, he added.
“We haven’t seen one of these in Otukpo for a very long time,” another resident of the town said on Friday night.
The daredevil bank robbers, armed with assault rifles and other dangerous weapons, carried out the coordinated strike on the four banks leaving 10 individuals, including three police officers.
An eyewitness said that the robbers stormed the banks at around 4:30 p.m in two Hilux vehicles and another smaller car, conducting the robbery that lasted about an hour.
He said the robber shot and killed police officers and a councillor, who was conducting business in one of the banks.
The incident caused panic in the town as residents, especially traders, were seen fleeing to safety.
