Barely a week after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in last February’s presidential election, raised an alarm over plans by elements within Boko Haram to attack him and other prominent persons in Adamawa State, there has been an inexplicable outburst of violence targeted at warehouses, business premises, and homes in Yola, the state capital.
Following the attacks by unknown persons, the Adamawa State government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on the state.
Recall that when Atiku raised issues over the planned attack and arrest of one of the alleged plotters of the attack around his home in Yola, the All Progressives Congress (APC) asked the searchlight for the planned attack be beamed on him and PDP chieftains
On Sunday, it was not exactly clear what precipitated the attacks, but early reports fingered hoodlums in the ENDSARS-like invasion of warehouses located at PZ and Kwanar Waya areas of Yola, the state capital.
Three years ago, spontaneous protests tied around scrapping the dreaded Police Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) snowballed out of control nationwide and was hijacked by criminal elements and other interest groups.
Like in the past protests, residents and criminals carted away food items like bags of rice, cartons of noodles, among others, as seen in viral videos making the rounds nouns on social media.
The Governor of the state, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, declared a 24-hour curfew which was effective from Sunday 30th July, 2023, as a result of what his spokesman, Mr. Humwashi Wonosikou said followed the dangerous dimension the activities of hoodlums.
Fintiri spokesman confirmed that hoodlums attacked people with matchets and broke into business premises and homes carting away property.
“With the curfew imposed, there will be no movement throughout the state. Rt. Hon. Fintiri said only those on essential duties with valid identification would be permitted to move around during the period of the curfew.
“The Governor is appealing to citizens and residents of the state to comply with the directive, adding that any person found contravening the order would be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law,” the statement added.
They were reports that security forces had moved into the streets, though reports on arrests were still unclear.
