The President-General of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, has announced that workers of shipping companies are downing tools for an indefinite nationwide strike from Monday.
This will fundamentally shut down activities at ports as imports will not come in and exports will not flow out.
According to him, the strike follows the ongoing dispute with shipping companies over poor pay package and welfare of employees.
He complained that for five years the union had been at loggerheads with shipping companies over the welfare of workers.
He accused the mostly Multinational companies of recalcitrance despite the intervention the immediate past Minister of Transportation, Muazu Sambo.
The union alleged that the companies, were adamant to their demands, prefering to treat workers as slaves.
