On a day three state governments dragged the federal government to the Supreme Court seeking to compel an extension of the use of old naira notes beyond the February 10 deadline by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), 13 of the 18 political parties contesting elections this February and March have threatened to withdraw from the 2023 general elections if the CBN extends the deadline beyond the set date.
The parties commended President Muhammadu Buhari on the redesign of the N200, N500 and N1,000 banknotes, insisted that the policy must stand.
The coalition of political party chairmen, in a statement by Mr. Kenneth Udeze of the Action Alliance (AA) said at a press briefing, “We hereby announce that at least 13 out of the 18 political parties in Nigeria will not be interested in the 2023 general elections and indeed we shall withdraw our participation from the electoral process if this currency policies are suspended or cancelled or if the deadline is further shifted.”
Thay berated the governments of Kogi, Kaduna and Zamfara states for heading to the Supreme Court an injunction to extend the deadline for the validity of three old notes.
