Explosion rocks Okene as President Buhari visits two hours later

There is disquiet in Okene after an explosion rocked the heart of Ebiraland. The loud bang is believed to have taken place around the palace of the paramount ruler of the land, the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Dr. Ado Ibrahim.

Three persons are feared dead in the explosion. The ancient town played host about two hours later to President Muhammadu Buhari. The President landed by chopper and inaugurated the referral hospital in the town.

He did not make any comment on the explosion, though he addressed the people as earlier planned.

He was being expected in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, at press time, to inaugurate the Ganaja Bridge and a square named after him.

Recall that a statement by Abdulmumin Abubakar, spokesperson to the Okene Local Government chairman had earlier announced the closure of roads in the town to receive President Buhari.

According to him, the road closure  will affect Obehira Junction along Okengwe road, Agassa roundabout, Junction around Dabras hotel, Obangede junction along Ogaminana road and Check-point junction along Auchi-Ajaokuta road, beginning from 7a.m Thursday, 29th December, 2022.

“However, those on essential duties, invited royal fathers and guests, party supporters, government functionaries and the general public are expected to arrive Okene town before 7a.m.

“Invited royal fathers will assemble at the office of the Chairman, Okene Local Government for onward movement to the newly constructed palace while the good people of Ebiraland will gather at the Local Government Secretariat to give Mr President a resounding welcome.

“The restriction will also affect Okene main market as it is expected to be closed for business within the period of President’s visit. These arrangements have already been discussed with the Traders’ association, NURTW, Keke NAPEP & Mothrcycle unions.

“Government urges the people to adhere strictly to these restrictions as they commend the major stakeholders for their show of understanding,” he added
