Violence has broken out at the popular Deidei market in Abuja between two ethnic groups after what a source said began with the death of a woman.
Details are still sketchy, but a driver said it all began after a commercial motorcyclist ran his bike into a articulated vehicle.
His passenger, a woman, allegedly died in the process.
An attempt by the colleagues and kinsmen of the cyclist to retrieve the motorbike infuriated the woman’s kinsmen who set the bike ablaze.
Angered by this, the cyclists retaliated, leading to the torching of shops and counter-reactions. As at 4.15 p.m. on Wednesday, there was still said to be tension in the area as security forces were being deployed.
