As Christian cleric and Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah; and head of Muslims in Nigeria and Sultan of Sokoto, Sultan Mohammad Sa’ad Abubakar, on Thursday condemned the criminal killing of Deborah Yakubu, a 200-level Home Economics student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, North-West Nigeria; another Sokoto cleric has been spotted on social media justifying the killing and inciting to more killings.
The Police in Sokoto says it has nabbed two suspects in connection with Deborah’s killing adding that it was after others.
Roughly translated from Hausa language, the cleric’s comments on https://youtu.be/E1UfAShgWRE read: “A young person in Sokoto insulted Allah’s prophet yesterday. In Sokoto we kill such. We don’t tolerate such idiocy in Sokoto.This is not Kano, which is a commercial center, where someone called the prophet names, including being an adulterer. They have been dragging about it.
Here we kill.
“When you touch the prophet we become mad people. No talk of a person being out of his mind. Kill him!
Anyone who touches the prophet, no punishment. Just kill!
“Even if the person repents or recants, forgiveness is God’s business. We must kill such. Out of his mind, but buys a device, data, opens social media and insults the prophet? Kill him! Don’t report as a grievance to any authority. Kill him! Even if he is an Islamic teacher, much less a useless rascal.
“Like Shehu Usman Dan Fodio, we are Mujahedeen (holy warriors) and Jihadists.
No compromise.
“Allah curse whoever touches the prophet. Those of you who displayed your wrath, Allah bless you. Kill and disperse!
“Secondly, on Abdu Jabbar in Kano. Perform the midnight prayer tonight! There shall be war between Sunni & Bidi’a sects, between Ahlis Sunna & Shiites, between followers of the prophet & his insulters. May Allah curse the Al Jabbaris. Allah help & strengthen Sunna & Ahlis Sunna. May Addul Jabbar be killed tomorrow unfailingly by the Kano Government.”
The Sultanate Council and Kukah called for the arrest and trial of Deborah’s killers, who attacked with stones, and all manner of objects before burning her.
The killers posted videos of their action on social media attracting wild spread outrage and condemnation.
Kukah’s statement was titled, ‘Murder of Ms Deborah Yakubu’ reads in part, “We condemn this incident in the strongest term and call on the authorities to investigate this tragedy and ensure that all the culprits are brought to book.
“The only obligation that is owed her immediate family, her fellow students and the school authorities is the assurance that those who are guilty of this inhuman act, no matter their motivation, are punished according to the extant laws of our land.
“This has nothing to do with religion. Christians have lived peacefully with their Muslim brothers here in Sokoto over the years.
“This matter must be treated as a criminal act and the law must take its cause.”
The Sultanate Council in a statement by its secretary, Sa’idu Mohammadu Maccido, reads, “The Sultanate Council has learnt with dismay the unfortunate happening at the Shehu Shagari College of Education, SSCOE Sokoto that led to the loss of life of a female student of the institution.
“The Sultanate Council condemns the incident in its totality and has urged the security agencies to bring the perpetrators of the unjustifiable incident to justice.
“The Sultanate Council has urged all to remain calm and ensure peaceful co-existence among all people of the state and nation.”
