Trapped Nigerian students in Sumy Ukraine on way home

Nigerian students trapped in city of Sumy in Ukraine may be on their way home soon.

The nearly 400 students had in viral videos feared for their safety, but heaved a sigh of relief when Russia agreed to a safe corridor for them and 1,000 others to leave Sumy.

In a tweet, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama,  on Tuesday, thanked the Ukrainian government for assistance to get the students out of the war zone.

“A million thanks to the government of Ukraine @MFA Ukraine for providing the buses, and Sewa International Europe @herambk, and @Sewa_ intl @sewauk_official for their amazing facilitation and coordination.

“And our indefatigable Ambassador to Ukraine, Shina Alege for his determination and perseverance. They all delivered for our Sumy students, ”  Onyema tweeted.

Everyday.ng reports that fears rose for the safety of the Nigerian students after Ukraine rejected an offer from Russia to open escape routes for civilians trapped by the fighting in the cities of Kharkiv, Kyiv, Mariupol and Sumy because several of the routes lead to Russia or its ally Belarus.
