Senate receives Buhari’s request to confirm Ministerial nominee, NPC, INEC Commissioners

The Senate on Tuesday received a request from President Muhammadu Buhari to confirm the nomination of Mu’azu Jaji Sambo from Taraba State as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The confirmation request was contained in a letter dated December 8, 2021, and read on the floor during the start of plenary by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan. 

President Buhari, in the letter explained that the request was made in accordance with Section 147(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). 

In another letter dated December 10, 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari sought the confirmation of the appointment of five nominees as Commissioners for the National Population Commission (NPC). 

The letter reads in part, “In accordance with the provision of Section 154 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), I hereby forward for confirmation, by the Senate, the under-listed nominees as Commissioners in the National Population Commission.”

The nominees are Engineer Benedict Ukpong (Akwa Ibom), Mrs. Gloria Izonfo (Bayelsa), Barr. Patricia O. Inyanya Kupuchi (Benue), Dr. Bala Haliru (Kebbi) and Dr. Eyitayo Oyetunji (Oyo).

Also, the Senate received a formal request from the President to confirm the appointment of six nominees as National Commissioners, and one other as Resident Electoral Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). 

The request was contained in a letter dated December 10, 2021, and read during plenary by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

Buhari explained that the request was made pursuant to paragraph 14 of Part (1) of the Third Schedule to the 1999 Constitution (as amended). 

The letter reads: “Pursuant to paragraph 14 of Part (1) of the Third Schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), I hereby forward for the confirmation, by the Senate, the appointment of the underlisted nominees as National Commissioners and Resident Electoral Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission.”

The nominees include Mal. Mohammed Haruna, National Commissioner (Niger – North Central), Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu (Delta – South-South), Ukeagu Kenneth Nnamdi (Abia – South East), and Major General A. B. Alkali (rtd) – Adamawa, (North East).

Others are Engr. (Prof.) Rhoda H. Gumus (Bayelsa – South-South), Mr. Sam Olumekan (Ondo – South West), and Olaniyi Olaleye Ijalaye (Ondo – South West), Resident Electoral Commissioner.
