Five days after he was last seen, an Abuja-based journalist, with Vanguard Newspaper, Mr. Tordue Salem, has been declared missing.
Salem, the House of Representatives correspondent for the Lagos-based newspaper, was last seen last week Wednesday, but Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Babaji Sunday, disclosed on Sunday that his men are searching for Tordue.
“We are seriously on the matter. However, we have not received any information about any kidnap or demand for ransom.
“My men have not received any information about any corpse either on the road or abandoned corpse from the mortuary. But we are seriously searching,” he said.
The CP said Tordue left his car at the National Assembly Complex on the day he went missing, noting that he may have left the conplex with some other persons.
Babaji’s comments come as the Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council, tasked security agencies in Abuja, to make all efforts in locating the journalist.
The NUJ FCT in a statement on Sunday said, “For all of us journalists in Abuja, we have been on edge these past few days over the mysterious disappearance of our colleague and friend, Mr. Tordue Salem.
“It is worrying that an adult will simply varnish into thin air without a trace. This is unacceptable and we urge the police and DSS to rise up to the occasion and provide answers to this troubling situation,” the statement signed by Emmanuel Ogbeche and Ochiaka Ugwu, chairman and secretary, respectively, read.
The union called on journalists to remain hopeful, prayerful and offer any lead that could prove useful in resolving the impasse.
