Indigenes of the Nger State studying in the University of Jos have been evacuated by the state government because of the fragile security situation on the Plateau.
Last Sunday, 23 Fulani travellers were killed on Rukuba road in Jos, while others were injured in a carnage allegedly perpetrated by Irigwe Youths on a mourning procession to bury their own dead, allegedly killed by Fulani militants.
In reprisal attacks, three students of the University of Jos were said to among those killed. The University has since been shut down by the management after the Students Union Government raised concerns over their dead colleagues
In a statement, the spokeswoman to Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger state, Mrs. Mary Noel-Berje, said the action became necessary as the security situation has compelled the University Management to suspend the Second Semester Examinations for 2019/2020 Academic Session of the institution.
Worried about the wellbeing of her citizens and for them not to be left stranded as well as become victims of circumstances, the state government through the Commissioners for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs as well as Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, made arrangements for vehicles and security personnel to ensure safe evacuation and return of the students.
The state government reiterated its unwavering commitment to the safety of its citizens irrespective of their geopolitical locations.
