Police Service Commission approves IGP’s recommendation to suspend DCP Abba Kyari

These are not the best of times for Police crack detective, Deputy Commissioner Abba Kyari, as the recommendation of the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Usman Baba, for his suspension has been endorsed by Police Service Commission (PSC).

On Saturday, Police Force spokesman, Police Commissioner Frank Mba, said the IGP recommended that Kyari be suspended. On Sunday, the approval came through.

Within a space of a week, Kyari fell from grace, having been implicated by internet fraudster, Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas, in the arrest of another fraudster after allegedly receiving a bribe from him.

The PSC explained in a letter conveying the suspension that its decision followed the indictment of Kyari by the Gederal Bureau a Investigation (FBI) in a US court in the trial of Hushpuppi. The US court ordered the arrest of Kyari.

The PSC letter states that DCP Abba Kyari’s suspension took effect from Saturday, July 31, 2021 and would subsist pending the outcome of the investigation in respect of his indictment by the FBI.

The PSC requested the Police chief to keep it abreast of further development on the Kyari matter for necessary action.

The PSC statement on Kyari’s suspension reads:

FBI INDICTMENT:PSC Suspends DCP Abba Kyari , Direct IGP to Take Further Actions

The Police Service Commission has suspended Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police and Head, Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force from the exercise of the Powers and functions of his office.

Abba Kyari’s suspension took effect from Saturday, July 31st 2021 and would subsist pending the outcome of the investigation in respect of his indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the United States.

The Commission has also directed the Inspector General of Police to furnish it with information on further development on the matter for necessary further action.

The Commission’s decision which was conveyed in a letter with reference, PSC/POL/D/153/vol/V/138 to the Inspector General of Police today, Sunday, August 1st, 2021, was signed by Hon. Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court and Honourable Commissioner 1 in the Commission for the Commission’s Chairman, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, a retired Inspector General of Police who is currently on leave.
