What implications for Nigeria as Chad’s Deby killed, and son takes over

Must read

Minutes after the death of Chadian President, Idriss Deby, his son, General Mahamat Kaka, has been named as his interim successor.

His death has got military and other analysts wondering its implications for Nigeria, since he was seen as a Nigerian and Western ally in the fight against militants and jihadists.

It has not always so, as the Federal Government viewed him with suspicions for a long time, but with Chadian rebels inching toward the capital, fears are been raised about the safety of Nigeria.

Chadian Army Spokesman, General Azem Bermandoa Agouna said Kaka, was named interim president by a transitional council of military officers.

Deby died on Tuesday from injuries he sustained at the war front against some rebels, while leading a brigade against rebels in the North of the country.

68 years old Derby has just won his re-election for a 6th term.

President Muhammadu Buhari a month ago met with Chadian President, Idriss Deby, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

It was gathered that the two leaders deliberated on sub-regional issues including security challenges occasioned by the activities of Boko Haram.

Mr Deby, who has ruled Chad for 30 years, began his campaign for a sixth term on March 13, calling for unity after rival protests were banned.
