The most prominent traditional ruler in Borno State and head of the Kanuri race, Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi, has lamented the attack on the convoy of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, declaring that if the States’s Chief Security Officer could be so attacked, no one else is safe in the north-eastern state..
His words on a visit to the Governor: “Your Excellency, we are not happy about what has happened in Baga the other time, it is very unfortunate and great pity. If the convoy of the whole Chief Security Officer of the state will be attacked, then wallahi nobody is safe, because he is the number one citizen of the state, he is the Chief Security Officer of the State.
“If a convoy of such highly placed person in the State will be attacked, I repeat, nobody is safe. The matter is getting worse, I urge everyone to raise up our hands to seek for Allah’s intervention.”
The Shehu was on a traditional sallah homage on the Governor at the Government House.
Zulum came under attack on his way to Baga, leading to an accusation by the Governor that elements within the Army were complicit in the attack and insurgency generally.
The next day after the attack on Zulum, mortars were fired into Maiduguri by insurgents. At least four persons were killed, including a man and his son. 16 persons were said to have been injured.
