Barely 24 hours after the Police high command washed its hands off the issue of releasing suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, from detention, he is a free man.
He was released Wednesday evening after spending 10 days in detentio. A presidential panel began investigating him for alleged corruption and insubordination, based on a memo by Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami.
But some of his loyalists at the commission have joined him in suspension, following reports of their been sent home on the orders of Malami. The move, it was gathered, is to allow for unimpeded investigations.
Among those sent home are the Secretary of the commission. Mr. Olanipekun Olukoyede
Media reports earlier today said the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, asked Tosin Ojaomo, Magu’s lawyer to direct the request for his bail to the Presidential panel investigating his activities in office.
Adamu told Ojaomo, “Your letter OOC/TOL/89A/07/2020 of July 10th, 2020 on the above-underlined subject, refers.
“The Inspector-General of Police directs that your attention be drawn to the fact that the Nigeria Police Force is not investigating CP Ibrahim Magu (your client) and he is accordingly, not being detained by the police but by the Presidential Panel that is investigating the activities of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
“The Inspector-General of Police, therefore, advises that you consider redirecting your request to the Chairman of the Presidential panel for appropriate attention.”
