The alleged rape and torture of a young lady, identified as Elizabeth Oyeniyi, is stirring anger and rage on the social media after the gubernatorial candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Natasha Akpoti, called out the commissioner on social media.
Another video on social media has the young lady explaining what transpired, at some points, on prompting from her unnamed interviewer.
Kogi Police spokesman, DSP William Ovye, said on phone that the Police has no report in any of its locations on the alleged torture and rape, but added that the command was monitoring the goings-on on the social media.
While the commissioner of water resources, Abdulmumin Danga, has remained silent, the state government said it was investigating the attack and would bring those culpable to justice, if the allegations are proven.
In a statement, the Kogi Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, reads:
“The attention of the Kogi State Government has been drawn to the allegations of assault, battery and other serious crimes levied against the above-named individual who is a serving Commissioner in Kogi State.
It is alleged that he is involved in the alleged abduction and assault of a woman which allegedly occurred in Lokoja recently.
“His Excellency, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, who is an avowed advocate of the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens, and especially within the boundaries of our dear State is shocked by these accusations.
“Accordingly, the Governor has ordered accelerated investigation into the matter and hereby assures both accuser and accused, as well as the general public, that the whole truth will be uncovered and justice served as appropriate.
“The Kogi State Government reaffirms its unalloyed commitment to the protection of everyone from all forms of oppression, and will not tolerate violence against women or children under any form or guise.
“We give our word that if these allegations are proven, everyone found culpable will be brought to justice.
“We urge our people to continue observing the protocols of prevention and safety relating to the CoviD-19 outbreak and reiterate our commitment to keeping our state free of the disease.”
