As efforts continue to heal the wounds of aggrieved persons within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and with all eyes on the forthcoming 2023 election, the party has named one of its leaders and close associate of former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the party, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as head of its reconciliation committee.
The APC is bedevilled by internal acrimony at different levels. The National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, is locked in a bitter war of supremacy for the soul of the party in his home Edo State with Governor Godwin Obaseki. Obaseki has written the inspector-General of Police and head of the State Security Service (SSS) to arrest Oshiomhole for causing trouble in the party in the State.
Also, in the National Working Committee, the National Chairman is at daggers-drawn with at least two northern national officers who have sworn to see him removed. This is outside the bitter political war of attrition he is known to have with serving and former State governors.
Elsewhere in the states, the reconciliation committee will have to contend with all manner of anger and bitterness.
Meanwhile, the choice of the membership of the reconciliation committee is raising eyebrows. Tinubu is believed to be interested in contesting the country’s highest office and the presence of Akande in the committee is being seen as a way of giving him a head-start in the race.
There are yet others who say the ploy is to draw Tinubu out, so that counter-measures can be put in place to checkmate him in the coming, dicey battle for the presidential ticket of the ruling party in three years time .
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the party said President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the party reviewed the membership of the party’s committee.
The statement adds, “The 12-member committee has the following as members.
1. Chief Bisi Akande (Chairman)
2. Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello
3. Governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola
4. Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi
5. Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase
6. Sen. Umaru Tanko Al-Makura
7. Sen. Kashim Shettima
8. Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor
9. Alh. Nasiru Aliko Koki
10. Sen. Khairat Gwadabe-Abdulrazak
11. Sen. Binta Garba
12. Sen. John Enoh (Secretary).
“The Committee is empowered to address grievances of party members across the country and resolve existing conflicts, all with a view to fostering oneness, strengthen the party for better governance and ensure unity of purpose within the party.
“The committee will be inaugurated on Tuesday 11th February 2020 at the APC National Secretariat by 3pm.”
