Unsure of the fluid situation on ground, South African telecommunications giant, MTN has advised its partner stores to remain shut.
But service centres are free to open.
In a directive from the management, the company tells outlets, which have been the butt of retaliatory attacks in parts of the country, for the mayhem visited on Nigerians and their businesses in South Arcs said directive is a cautionary measure that will allow it monitor the situation one last time on Monday.
The directive posted out Sunday reads in full, “Directives from Top management to allow only MTN owned service centers to open tomorrow, while Partner stores remain closed. This is a cautionary measure that will allow us monitor the situation one last time on Monday. We sincerely apologise for all the inconvenience.”
Another message sent out reads, “Thanks for your esprit de corps in these trying circumstances.
“In the light of the recent events, we reassure you that the security of you our partner and staff is of the utmost importance to us, hence our Connect stores are to remain closed on Monday September, 10 2019.
“Operations are to resume Tuesday September, 11 2019, on confirmation of the non-existence of further threat to our business.
“Thanks for partnering with MTNN PLC.”
There were indications that xenophobic attacks continued in parts of the former apartheid enclave with the reported stabbing of two persons in Johannesburg on Sunday.
Their nationalcities are not yet known, but Nigerians in the area have been briefed and advised to take safety precautions.
There have been calls by prominent Nigerians and groups warning against retaliatory attacks, because targeted outlets like Shoprite and MTN are South African franchises owned by and employing Nigerians.
