Assault: Senate probes Abbo, women storm NASS, wife backs him, Keyamo wants him arrested and arraigned

Must read

In Nigeria’s season of the inexplicable conduct, the wife of another man and Senator in the eye of the storm, Elisha Abbo, has done what is expected of her: backed her man to the hilt.

Police on Wednesday prevented tens of women protesters led by Aisha Yesufu, who stormed the National Assembly protesting his assault on the nursing mother, and calling for his arrest.

The women left shortly after.

But the Senate has set up a probe panel headed by a former governor of Ebonyi State, Sam Egwu, to investigate what Abbo allegedly did.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, put the panel together after a point of order raised by Kaduna Central Senator, Uba Sani, and support from other lawmakers.

Ahmad disclosed that contacts had been made from far and wide by Nigerians appalled at what happened.

The panel has two weeks to submit its report.

On Twitter, Emily Eric Abbo, the Senator’s spouse, declared: “I stand with you babana. And we will always stand for truth.

“My husband is innocent of what people are saying against him.”

Senator Abbo (Adamawa, PDP) was caught on camera beating up a woman in a sex-toy shop, allegedly on account of her describing him as drunk.

The video of the encounter, released by online newspaper, Premium Times, took place seven weeks ago has gone viral, and is a subject of radio and other mainstream and new media debates.

Expectedly, pro-All Progressives Congress (APC) lawyer and head of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo SAN, has come up with options of how to deal with the Senator.

He said: “The case of Senator Elisha Abbo is very straightforward: the Police must immediately take three steps

“1. Arrest him (no formal complaint is needed with the evidence on tape) 2. Obtain his statement (if he’s willing to make one) and that of the victim 3. Arraign him in court.”
