The publication of a payment voucher for a N1.5 billion project in Lokoja, Kogi State that is yet to face-off three years after, is raising dust on Twitter.
Published on Senator Dino Melaye’s verified Twitter handle, the project is for an overhead bridge at Ganaja, a traffic-snarl spot for those headed to parts of Kogi Central and Kogi East Senatorial Districts as well as the Eastern flank of the country.
Many praised Melaye for the revelation, though one asked him to publish the monies he got for constituency projects since 2015, and how he spent them.
Though Senators do not actually get paid for these projects, they influence the insertion of the projects in the federal government’s budget and “push” relevant government agencies to award and execute the projects. Some have been known to influence the choice of contractoes they turn around to connive with to stall the projects.
Many prodded the Kogi West Senator to continue his whistle-blowing activities, while others criticised his meddlesomeness.
Governor Yahaya Bello has come under intense criticism in the build-up to gubernatorial elections in Kogi State in November. He has been accused of financial mismanagement, while owing workers for upwards of 38 months.
But he continues to insist his hands are clean, and he owes workers for only four months.
