At about 6:45 p.m. Saturday, the lawmaker representing Lagelu/Akinyele federal constituency of Oyo State in the House of Representatives, Temitope Olatoye a.k.a Sugar was attacked by gunmen. He was shot in the eye.
According to Police spokesman, Frank Mba, in a television interview, he was on his way from a visit when he ran into gunmen who opened fire on his car. He said the police chiefs in the State will soon give a detailed report.
Earlier reports said he was shot by suspected thugs in Elesu village in Ward 13, Lalupon, Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Olatoye was rushed to the Accident and Emergency Centre of the University College Hospital (UCH), where he died shortly after.
Olatoye was a senatorial candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in the February 23 National Assembly election.
Worse, on the same day three voters were shot dead in Jalingo, Taraba State; and another person, Osondu Odoh, was shot dead in Igbo-eze Local Government Area, Enugu State by an alleged “accidental discharge” from a policeman’s gun.
Mbah however said the dead man was not an observer as earlier thought adding that the man was shot in a private residence. The name of an All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Saturday’s election was being thrown around as the owner of the home where the man was shot dead.
There were also reports of violent clashes in other parts of the Oyo State capital.
