Rivers State Government says it has intercepted what it described as the details of the deployment of hit squads put together by the Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad (FSARS) “to hijack electoral materials and kill or maim PDP members across the State.”
But the Police in the State has said the statement by the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Emma Okah, is nothing short of a false alarm, according to a source.
Rivers State government and the Police high command have been embroiled in a cat and mouse game for quite some time over SARS operations in the State.
Okah said the deployment of the SARS chiefs is in keeping with the threat of the Transport Minister that there will be devastating violence before and during the elections.
One source said the posting of the policemen was intended to keep the peace during the elections as a routine deployment.
The statement issued in Port Harcourt by Okah however says it is sad that despite the assurances of President Mohammadu Buhari that the elections will be free, peaceful and fair as well as the pleas of the international community for peace to reign, “the APC and SARS in Rivers State are still intent on disrupting the elections in Rivers State andpossibly killing or maiming innocent people including National Youth Corps members.”
The statement proceeded to give a list of the policemen posted to different axis of the State.
