Coming barely three days after some Nigerians contributed N45m to purchase the Presidential Nomination form of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for President Muhammadu Buhari, for the 2019 poll, the immediate past Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in Anambra State, Bar. Chuks Okoye at the weekend, joined the growing number of political office seekers who were being sponsored by constituents, groups and friends, as members of his Anambra Central constituency sponsor him for the senatorial aspiration.
Mr Okoye told journalists in Awka that his Anambra Central Senatorial District constituents have pledged to set up a trust fund towards achieving his desire to represent them in the National Assembly.The move, he stated, was informed by his commitment, dedication to service, credibility, integrity and wealth of experience in lawmaking and public administration.
Okoye, said the seven local government areas in the senatorial zone-Idemili North, Idemili South, Awka North, Awka South, Njikoka, Dunukofia and Anaocha as well as the 53 constituent autonomous communities who had agreed to back him in his quest to represent them in the 9th Senate, said they prefered him to others eyeing the position.
According to him, “The pressure on me to run for the 9th Senate has been so much that my people have decided to set up a trust fund from which the project will be executed.
“As a lawyer by training, with courage and eloquence, they said I’m better equipped than others eyeing the position.
“They said experience too will give me an edge to serve where laws are manufactured,” he explained.
He regretted what he described as glaring lack of infrastructure in the zone occasioned by protracted marginalization. Mr Okoye therefore pledged to champion the cause of restructuring the country through the instrumentality of legislation with a deserving zeal, when voted into power.
He promised to pursue a bill for the enforcement of referendum as well as establishment of a ‘judiciary police’ targeted at giving that arm of government a “teeth that can bite.”
“I’ll support the discussion on any issue threatening the corporate existence of the country, including restructuring because refusal to talk about such issues is what has led to incessant agitations across the country,” he added.
