Senegal has done Africal proud with a 2 – 1 victory over much-favoured Poland. Of the five African teams in the competition, the West Africàn nation were leading two goals to nil until the last eight minutes (including four minutes extra-time) when Poland pulled one back.
Tunisia, Nigeria, Egypt, and Morocco all lost their opening matches, leaving Senegal to save the day for Africa.
After 16 years in the cooler, Senegal returned to the World Cup with a player from the 2002 team, Cisse, as Coach, went ahead in the 37th minute.
Niang, returning to the field after being treated, beat Goalkeeper Szczesny to double the lead 24 minutes later.
But Grzegorz Krychowia headed in a free kick in the 86th minute to get a goal for Poland.
