From Bob Akinola, in Washington D.C.
While I appreciate your consistent and continuous effort to remind me of who I really am, and not to think too highly of myself (as if someone died and and put me in charge); I do not appreciate your, though relevant; but missionary cycle of everyday news cycle without addressing the prevailing core issue of our time.
The president of the United State who happens to be a Republican; a party that my wife and I have unrepentantly and proudly been a part of even prior to becoming a Nigerian American for nearly two decades.
Just to absorb your shock, we did not even vote for Obama which is almost sacrilegious as an African American – especially first generation motherlanders like us.
Against all odds and probably too sensible to ignore, I have supported and continued to support President Donald Trump until today when after dropping off my kids from school and quickly picking up my wife from her first job to her second job (as embarrassingly unproud as I am as a husband because I have to pick her up at midnight after 16 hours a day work); I am ashamed of my President’s comment; first, referring to my country of origin Nigeria as “…return to their huts” and ultimately confirming his heart disposition today by referring to “us” seemingly un-white and especially African countries as “Shithole countries”.
This is not just un-American; it is also un- presidential and vulgarly racist.
President Buhari’s; I especially expect you to come out with your “full militant” might and “I don’t give a damn reputation” and defend our beloved Nigerians and Nigerian Americans who shockingly are “the most educated immigrant in North American” ahead of all Asians and Europeans.
To Nigerian Americans, your legacy is doomed if you maintain, and not upset civility, by rallying all of us beyond our subdivision privileges and “living for billing” diaspora dreams.
