Women palaver hits PDP as women lament breach of constitution

Must read

The Governor Serials Dickson Reconciliation Committee has its work cut out for it and may be making a success of it in the South-West geo-political zone of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but it has a new but potent force to contend with: the influential women’s wing.
They are up in arms that the party breached its own constitution by not giving 35% of its offices to women as mandated by Section 6(7).
The section states: “In nomination for party officers, not less than 35% shall be reserved for women.
The women noted in the petition addressed to the national headquarters of the party and dated December 12, 2017 that the party which had been commended by women in Nigeria and the world in the past “flagrantly and deliberately breached the provision of the party’s constitution.”
The protesters made copious references to the PDP constitution including Section 6(5) which referred to the emancipation and participation of women by encouraging them at all levels.
“What our party has done to the women is clearly discrimination and injustice,” the petition added.
They threatened the leadership that if nothing was done within two weeks, they would initiate a public outcry against the party.
