By PDP Women’s Forum.
The PDP Women’s Forum (PDP-WF) receives with much gladness the news coming out of today’s NEC (24th Oct. 2017) that one out of the two Deputy National Chairmen of the PDP will be a WOMAN.
It believes that the adoption of the twinning formula of matching women with men will go a long way to endear the party to Nigerians and urges the PDP to extend this policy to all other elective positions as a means of achieving the 35% quota entrenched in the party’s constitution.
This policy which is the outcome of a proposal put forward by the PDP- WF, will certainly be pivotal in defining future democratic norms, directing political parties and ensuring that they are responsive to their membership as well as impact on Nigeria’s politics as a whole.
We are proud that NEC has shown a strong understanding of the demands of different constituencies of the party and is beginning to work towards building a more inclusive party.
The PDP-WF is aware of a history of PDP appointing women into powerful positions, but is now more than ever assured that the party is open to extend this policy to elective politics. We can say without any doubt, that this will endear PDP to all Nigerians.
Furthermore, this resolution by NEC is coming one month after the strategic choice of Dr. Chidi Onyemulekwe (nee Ekwueme) as the deputy governorship candidate in the Nov. 2017 Anambra Gubernatorial elections.
We proudly salute the courage of the NCC, the BOT and its chairman, NEC, former governors, the PDP caucus in the National Assembly, and members, as well as the ever supportive PDP Women’s Forum, for their unflinching commitment and cooperation towards all structures of the PDP.
