The Abomination 13

Must read

Lara laughed at him and said she was happy. Speaking of the topic she had a story she wanted to tell him. She’d read it recently while they were avoiding “Dr. Kolo-mentals” suggestion. A couple moved into a new neighbourhood with their son, he made friends with another child and the neighbours commented fervently on how striking their resemblance was, so the wife decided to see for herself and came home early from work on a particular day. She saw her son’s friend and her heart skipped several beats, it was uncaning, she was staring at her son times two. She didn’t make a big deal yet and asked her husband to come home early the next day so he too could see it. He was just as surprised.
They asked the boy to invite his parents over for dinner soon. They came on the due. The other couple were definitely the parents of the boy, he looked like his father. The couple too noticed the resemblance and talked about it in passing. The first couple had watched very closely and knew that the resemblance wasn’t just coincidence, their mannerisms too gave them away.
In the course of conversation, the hosts asked how their guests how they had met. They had met in Oakland, the hosts shared a look. The husband had schooled there and had a hard time so he had tried to survive doing a lot of “jobs,” including having being a working at a sperm bank. He didn’t elaborate, but the hosts exchanged glances, again. They had all the confirmation they needed.
Turned out their son wasn’t exactly theirs, because they had got the sperm that fertilised his wife’s from the same sperm bank in Oakland while they lived there.
When the husband noticed his wife began bonding a little more extra than should be with the their guests weeks after the dinner, he put in action a relocation plan that saw them in Canada, far away from the United States.
While Lara explained that the husband had probably been paranoid and that his wife didn’t have any ulterior motive being friends with her sons ‘father’, Kola nursed ideas in his head that made him finally understand why Lara had asked him time and time again when they had first married if truly he was a Christian.
He laughed at her banter and said he understood her bias. What he left unsaid were the sinister thoughts running through his head. He shrugged it off by saying “a man has got to do what a man has got to do”
“What is that?” she asked.
“What?”
“You just said, a man has got to do what he has got to do. What is that?”
Kola froze. Did he say that loud. “Nothing,” he replied. When she squinted at him, he said, “did you expect him to keep his wife in the same neighbourhood with “Donatus”? he asked.
“Ok o,” she sighed.
Phew, that was close, he thought to himself.
They both laughed and just cuddled on the slowly warming sand, Lola had a sun hat with which she shielded her eyes.
She’d dozed off when Kola nudged her and proposed that they headed back to their suite for lunch. As they walked back she remembered that she might know somebody in Brazil, she wasn’t very sure but she told Kola anyway. Kola said that was good, if they could find him at least they’ll have somebody to visit.
They had lunch in the restaurant and then went up stairs. Lola called a handful of friends back home before eventually she got access to her friend’s number. She called him and he was thrilled to hear from her, he invited them over for dinner the next day and sent a cab for them.
He was living well with a very stable job. He’d married a Brazilian woman, they’d been married for three years but weren’t ready for children.
Lola smirked at the irony. While she was actively looking to reproduce and couldn’t, this couple could and wouldn’t. It reminded her of the hollow in her soul but she pushed it aside so she wouldn’t be a spoil sport.
Her friend Shola had been two years ahead of her in the university, they studied the same courses and he helped her out every now and then. They’d attended the same fellowship too, that was were they’d met actually. He’d asked to court her on two accounts but she hadn’t been ready to “awaken love before it’s time”. She’d liked him back though but she had a testimony to keep and it was more important to her.
Shola had apparently lost his faith somewhere along the line. The Christians he had met when he first moved to Brazil had been very permissive Christians and it had been hard to keep up with what you thought you knew in an environment where they didn’t know the half of it.
Shola served them a local brew he promised they’d love and they did. It was very sweet so Lara indulged, she was easily entreated with sweet things. Kola on the other hand was guarded since he’d only just met Shola who seemed to have quite a history with Lara. He sipped his drink slowly, trying to keep up with the flow of conversation and continue the very sinister plot in his head. She had even made it easier when she brought Shola into the scene.
Shola remarks about how much he’d liked her and the tempo of conversation changed and there was a hint of a flirty undertone, Kola followed the conversation with an ‘ahh’ here and an ‘oh’ there.
Kola realized that the drink was intoxicating when his usually guarded wife started talking with a loose tongue. She was talking about their marriage and its childless state. Kola quickly interjected the banter and heralded his blabbing wife out of the place.
