- Activist wants IGP to prosecute Speaker.
From Musa Solomon Yola
He allegedly dished a hot slap to a police sergeant, but he is in his own hot pot of soup with a call for his impeachment as the Speaker of Adamawa State House of Assembly.
Alhaji Kabiru Mijinyawa, the Speaker, according to Adamawa-based activist and President of Progressive Mind for Development Initiative (PMDI) Alhaji Abubakar Abdulsalam, should be removed from his exalted office.
He has also given the Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Idris Ibrahim, seven days to arrest and charge the speaker to court for slapping a police sergeant in uniform.
The activist said that if the IG failed to take action on the assault against the cop, the police will become a shameless security outfit in the country.
“If Adamawa Speaker is not educated, I want to inform him that the uniform represents the image of Nigeria and slapping a security personnel in uniform is a grievous offense that takes a minimum of 10 years in prison. The speaker should be reminded that ignorance is not an excuse in law,” he said.
The activist urged the lawmakers to remove the speaker to pave way for him to face prosecution in court, pointing out that his continuous stay in office as speaker will tarnish the image of the House.
Adamawa Police Command confirmed the manhandling of a police Sergeant by the Speaker.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Othman Abubakar, stated that investigation is still on-going.
An eye witness however told newsmen last week that the sergeant who was among the policemen working with the speaker complained he had not been fed for days. Infuriated, the speaker allegedly descended on him.
“The dazed Sergeant was rescued by a civil defence corps man who had to remind the speaker that he was beating up a policeman,” the eye witness, who preferred anonymity, said.
