Senate rejects 82 year-old envoy nominee, clears 45 others

An 82 year old ambassadorial nominee had his dream of being an ambassador truncated by the Senate Thursday, but 45 others were confirmed as Ambassadors, while the names of 27 were sent from the presidency to be screened as States Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
Justice Sylvanus Adiewere Nsofor from Imo State was rejectied as ambassador on account of fraility, undetailed and satirical answers to questions from the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs which screened 46 others.
Another nominee from Ondo State, Jacob Igbekele Daodu, had his dream spiked because of a security report and the Senate Committee said he performed below par in his answers to questions.
Those to be screened to be RECs are Dr. Mahmuda Isah (Kebbi), Prof. Samuel Egwu (Kogi), Amb. Rufus Akeju (Lagos), Prof. Mustapha Zubairu (Niger), Agboke Mutiu Olaleke (Ogun), Sam Olugbadebo Olumekun (Ondo), AbdulGaniyu Olayinka Taju (Oyo), Prof. Riskuwa Shehu (Sokoto), Barr. Kasim Gana Geidam (Yobe), Ahmad Bello Mahmud (Zamfara), Dr. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda (Plateau), Umar Ibrahim (Taraba), Prof. Francis Chukwuemeka Ezeonu (Anambra), Mr. Emeka Ononamadu Joseph (Imo), Obo. O. Effanga (Cross River) and Dr. Briyai O. Frankland (Baylesa).
The list also has Prof. Godswill Obioma (Abia), Ibrahim Abdullahi (Adamawa),  Alhaji Ahmad Makama (Bauchi), James Apam (Benue), Barr. Mike Igini (Delta), Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji ( Ebonyi), Dr. Illoh Joseph Chuks (Enugu), Hussaini Halilu Pai (FCT), Sadiq Abubakar Musa (Kaduna), Jibrin Ibrahim Zarewa (Kano), Dr. (Mrs) and Asmau Sani Maikudi (Katsina).
The new ambassadors approved by Senate are Dr. Mrs Uzoma. E. Emenike (Abia),  Aminu Iyawa (Adamawa), Maj. Gen. Godwin. G. Umor (rtd) (Akwa Ibom), Christopher J. N. Okere (Anambra), Yusuf Maitama Tuggar (Bauchi), Baba Madugu (Bauchi),  Brig. Gen. Stanley Diriyai (Bayelsa), Prof. Steven Ugba (Benue) and Baba Jidda (Borno), Etubom Asuquo (Cross River), Mr Frank Efeduma (Delta), Jonah Odo (Ebonyi), Uyagwe Igbe (Edo) Eniola Ajayi (Ekiti), Maj.-Gen. Chris Eze (Enugu), Suleiman Hassan (Gombe), Aminu Dalhatu (Jigawa), Ahmed Bamali (Kaduna), Deborah Iliya (Kaduna) and Prof. Dandatti Abdulkadir (Kano), Haruna Ungogo (Kano), Justice Isa Dodo (Katsina), Mohammadu Barade (Katsina), Prof. Tijjani Bande (Kebbi), Prof. Y. O. Aliu (Kogi) Nurudeen Mohammed (Kwara), Prof. Mohammed Yisa (Kwara).
Also approved are Justice George Oguntade (Lagos) and Modupe Irele (Lagos), Musa Muhammad (Nasarawa), Ahmed Ibeto (Niger), Suzanne Folarin (Ogun), Afolahan Adeyemi (Osun), Maj.-Gen. Ashimiyu Olaniyi (retd) (Oyo), James Dimka (Plateau), Haruna Abdullahi (Plateau), Orji Ngofa (Rivers), Sahabi Gada (Sokoto), Kabiru Umar (Sokoto), Hassan Ardo (Taraba), Goni Bura (Yobe), Garba Gajam (Zamfara), Bala Mairiga (Zamfara) and Ibrahim Ugbada (FCT).
The President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, who presided Thursday urged government to ensure payment of salaries of outstation foreign affairs staff to get the best out of them.
